20| Project Resource Management: Herzberg's theory of motivation and hygiene

Herzberg's theory of motivation and hygiene factors.

Motivation factors include challenging work, recognition, responsibility, and opportunities for personal growth. Motivation is not focused on external nudges or stimulation, instead, it is more about what's inside of a person and inside of the work.

Hygiene factors are things like status, compensation, job security, a retirement plan, work conditions, company policies, and supervisory practices. These are things at work that if not done properly can result in team members being dissatisfied. Taking care of only hygiene factors will not make the team members feel motivated to do something. Genuine motivation is when team members do something because they want to do that work.

Important to remember: Herzberg states that compensation ($) is a hygiene factor, NOT a motivator.

19| Project Resource Management: Tuckman's ladder model

Tuckman's ladder model identifies the following stages of team formation and development:
- Forming: People are brought together as a team.
- Storming: There are disagreements as people learn to work together.
- Norming: Team members begin to build good working relationships.
- Performing: The team becomes efficient and works effectively together. This is the point when
the project manager can give the most attention to developing individual team members.
- Adjourning: The project ends and the team is disbanded.

Patience and hard work often beat Talent.
